Josh - Developing a personalised lifestyle
Because Josh and his family took the time and opportunity to think and to take the authority to direct his supports in a way that makes sense to them, Josh’s life is more and more being built around his passions, value and interests and who he is rather than around what people think of as his limits.
Rikki - Taking steps to get a life that makes sense
When I left school I did what a lot of people who have disabilities get to do. I went to a day centre and did the things that you normally do in a day centre like drawing, cooking, art, yoga, going out and they even told me I could get a job. I didn’t hate this stuff but I didn’t have much choice about it and I didn’t look forward to going there and doing it, it was pretty boring, and the job never happened either. Going to a day centre seemed to be what you do when you leave school, that’s what every body else did anyway.
Ben: Imagining a Better Lifestyle
Ben’s is a transformation story. He has changed himself from a dissatisfied, angry young man, confined in a space where he did not want to be, to a mature individual in the process of achieving his personal goals and ambitions. Ben’s is one particular story but there are other stories like his. They are worth thinking about, especially for families and carers looking after young adults who may be encountering the same frustrations that Ben worked his way through. His story shows that when people are assisted to imagine a better lifestyle for themselves and given personalised supports and planning good things will happen in their lives.
Everyone Has A Story
There are so many misconceptions about having a physical disability and I’m often treated so differently as a result of mine. This is Beth's story as told to Frankie Magazine earlier this year.
Chris - What makes sense to me
I have been thinking a lot about what it is that I want. It is not that hard for me because I know what I want, the problem is getting the chance to do it. I can’t do what I want at a day centre for people with disabilities but I can get people here to help me to do the things that are important to me.
